To ensure you’re prepared for this change, now is the time to act. ALTOUR is here to help you understand what this change means and how to avoid last-minute travel disruptions.

What Is Real ID?

The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, is a security measure to establish minimum standards for issuing state driver’s licenses and identification cards. It enhances security at federal facilities, nuclear power plants, and commercial flights. The enforcement date is set for May 7, 2025.

Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses or state IDs are marked with a gold or black star (filled in or as a cutout). If your ID lacks this star, you’ll need to apply for one by providing key documents, such as proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency.

Do You Need a Real ID?

You will need a Real ID to:

  • Board domestic flights within the U.S.
  • Enter certain federal buildings and nuclear facilities

You do not need a Real ID to:

  • Drive, vote, apply for federal benefits, or access most federal facilities like post offices
  • Travel internationally (a passport is required for this)
  • Engage in law enforcement activities such as jury duty

How to Get a Real ID

To obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license, visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with the necessary documents, which generally include:

  • Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate or passport)
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Two proofs of residency (e.g., utility bill, bank statement)

Each state may have slightly different requirements, so it’s best to check with your local DMV well in advance.

What Happens If You Don’t Have a Real ID by the Deadline?

Starting May 7, 2025, travelers without a Real ID or an alternative form of identification will be denied boarding for domestic flights. This could lead to significant disruptions, especially for business travelers and frequent flyers.

Optional, But Essential for Travel

While a Real ID is not mandatory, it’s highly recommended for domestic travel convenience. Without a Real ID after the deadline, you’ll need another TSA-approved form of identification, such as a passport.

Don’t Wait, Prepare Now

DMV offices may become busier as the deadline approaches. Avoid long lines and last-minute stress by checking your ID now and starting the process if needed.
